Show Notes

Coach Larry Farmer,
In this episode, you’ll hear from Larry Farmer. Coach Farmer recently retired after a great 44-year coaching career. After a terrific high school career in Denver, Coach Farmer attended UCLA where he played for the legendary coach, John Wooden. At UCLA, Coach Farmer was a part of teams that won three straight National Championships. UCLA had a 89-1 record during this three-year span. As a matter of fact, Coach Farmer just returned back from UCLA; celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1972 National title team. After being drafted in the NBA by the Cleveland Cavaliers and in the ABA by the Denver Nuggets, Coach Farmer played professionally in Germany. However, early on, Coach Larry knew that he wanted to coach. Returning to his alma mater,  Coach Farmer was an assistant coach at UCLA from 1973 to 1981. And, at the age of 30, Coach Farmer was named the Head Coach of UCLA. Coach Farmer was a college Head Coach for 12 Seasons: at UCLA, at Weber State, and at Loyola Chicago. He also has been an assistant at UCLA, at the University of Hawaii, at Rhode Island, at North Carolina State, and at Western Michigan, as well as an assistant coach for the NBA's Golden State Warriors. This podcast is an incredible reflection of some of the great teachings of Coach John Wooden. And, Coach Larry Farmer is indeed a teacher of the game of basketball and life. Wait until you hear Coach Farmer talk about topics such as: being patient, be enthusiastic, how to be demanding but not demeaning, and how to be encouraging. Whereas, we all talk about our teams being fundamental. The real life examples that Coach Farmer shares about how the fundamentals were such a key ingredient to Coach Wooden’s success will have you rethinking how you approach your own team. Finally, the concept of “We and Us versus I and Me” is such a wonderful ending to the podcast. This teamwork mindset is such a great reminder for your team and family. Oh by the way, at the conclusion of this podcast, I promise that we will all be pulling out our pencils again. Coach Farmer ends the podcast with a massive tip on why he always used a pencil and how we should be always thinking about our post practice notes!
