Show Notes

Coach Katie Hempen’s Story:
In this episode, you’ll hear from Katie Hempen. Katie is currently an assistant women's basketball coach for Coach Fred Castro at Eastern Michigan University. Coach Castro was also a guest on the podcast (Episode 7). Katie was a spectacular All PAC 12 player at Arizona State under the tutelage of Charli Turner Thorne. Coach Kaite does an incredible job detailing what it was like to play for her college coach. Katie was also a part of USA Basketball. At Eastern Michigan, Coach Katie has worked her way up the coaching ladder: from Graduate Assistant Coach to Director of Basketball Operations to now Assistant Coach. As you soon will hear, Coach Katie does a great job describing her thought process of how she approached the GA and DOBO positions. She also talks in great detail the admiration she has for Coach Castro. She also offers numerous tips for young coaches. Being a young coach herself, however, she is very wise beyond her years. Wait to hear her thoughts on communication on the floor and how she directly conveys her knowledge to the young ladies that she coaches. In addition, her thoughts on constantly recruiting players before and after you get them is terrific advice for any coach - young or old. Finally, her emphasis on footwork is very detailed and a great tidbit on individual development. By the way, Coach Katie also depicts what it is like to be married as a young coach. Just get ready to smile when you hear Coach Katie talk so passionately about her wife and the impending birth of their daughter this April. This is a podcast about a young coach who is on the cusp of being a massive star in this industry.
