In this episode, you’ll hear from Jody May. Jody is currently the Head Coach at Albion College. Coach May has been the Head Coach of Albion since 2008. And Jody has been with Albion, and his mentor, Coach Mike Turner since 1997. Coach May won a DIII National Title as a player. However, he fell in love with the game of basketball because of countless hours watching his dad coach in Ohio. It is his Dad and Coach Turner who instilled into him his core coaching philosophy—to do things the right way. And Coach May has been doing things the right way since the moment he became the head coach of Albion. In 2019-2020, Coach May and his team won a conference championship. It was the culmination of years of hard work, grit and belief - chasing two incredible DIII Programs - who simply were at the top year in and out. However, this championship season was more than getting scores and countless stops. This was about an extreme tragedy that impacted their program, the loss of a player due to death.There is no coaching playbook when you lose a player on your team, especially a death. Quite simply, this is not a podcast about X and O’s. This is a podcast about a coach who had to truly lead his team in uncharted waters. As a former Albion player addressed his team: “You will never get over this, but you can get through it.” The 2019-2020 Albion basketball team did get through it in remarkable fashion. As a previous podcast guest DJ Mocini recently texted me about the leadership that Coach May performed during that season: “Coach of the year that season for any level, in any sport.” Coach DJ is so spot on!
